If you’ve been following my blog for a while now or have poked around a bit, I’m sure it’s pretty clear that I like setting outdoor goals for myself. I love heading outside to adventure and explore, but with a full-time job and all the homework I should be doing each night, it’s hard to find the time to simply just get outside. So, setting outdoor goals work for me.

From My Maine (Bucket) List, then 52 Hikes in 52 Weeks, and now Climbing 75,000 feet in Colorado, setting these goals motivate me to regularly get outside. But there’s something missing for me—with my latest goal in particular.

I need some help because mountain climbing in Colorado is tough work.

Mountain Climbing Training

This is me thinking about the energy needed to get to the summit. I’m sure I thought long and hard about it.

And because I’m with my laptop most of the day and night, I could really use some conditioning and weight training so I’m better fit to accomplish my goal. I’m not interested in spending much time in the gym, but I really wish I knew ways to strengthen the specific muscles I need most for mountain climbing as well as getting my lungs into tip-top shape.

Thankfully (seriously a coincidence!), REI just partnered with ACE (American Council on Exercise) to expand their already awesome Outdoor School class offerings. I completed a Colorado 14er Training Hike through REI Outdoor School and absolutely loved it. Starting this month in select cities, REI and ACE will offer multi-week, small group classes, including Mountain Climbing Training, Backpacking Training, and 5k-10k Run Training, just to name a few.

For me, the mountain climbing training course (perhaps paired with the run training) could be the perfect match for me to complete my Colorado peak bagging goal of climbing 75,000 feet in 1 year.

The experts from ACE designed these courses, which include a fitness assessment then weekly instruction focused on balance, mobility, cardio health and more and are all specific to your favorite outdoor activity. At only $120 for members and $150 for non-members (become a member for $20 and still save money), it’s an excellent deal to help accomplish your lofty—yet obviously super attainable—outdoor goals.
